On ELEMENTS by Anne Senstad

It has been found again.
What? – Eternity
It is the Sea fled away
with the Sun
 Arthur Rimbaud, 1872

The Sound of MA, is identified by the Sound of an Indestructible Moment of Silencecontained by a space equipped with vertical topology.

ELEMENTS is experential and immersive, sculpturally informed, - an installation of light, color, perception, ideas of sound and spatial phenomena. An amalgamation of sensations. All sensorial elements have scientific and experiential similarities, yet differ in nature in how they inhabit space and how they are experienced. The natural world can be perceived through scientific systems of frequencies, wavelengths and temperatures that are sensed by the eye, ear, brain, nerves, intellect and emotions. Colors are cold, warm, dark, light, euphoric, symbolic, representational – a mental, emotional and sensual language, where light, color and sound exist as implementing our system on infinite levels, potentially unknown levels. Sound exists as complex music, visual and narrative sound, in environmentally inhabited and charged spaces, outside of our realm of perception as sounds not heard, sounds used in prayers. Sound is mathematical and logical, yet is the direct path to the realm of perception. Synesthetically sound has color and color has sound. Physically color is perceived through the optical and nerve system. In the language of light and color, spectrums and hues inhabit space, give objects their identity, enlighten our environment and represent enlightenment of the soul.

Light and color represent nature in itself.  As Goethe proclaimed in his Theory of Colorslight owes its existence to the eye.  Referencing of course Newton’s scientific discoveries through the prism, where an object’s color was distinguished by the light of the sun through the prismatic. The ideas of perception in art can be related to Malevich’s essays on Suprematismin which he speaks about the non-objective system of elements through which sensations are expressed: the elements  of non-objective sensations are the beginnings of true essence. In the sphere of perceptive phenomena, non-objective essence is also it’s source, the absolute and pure. Perception of light, color, form, space and object are intertwined in Plato’s ideas where there arises the necessity of a soul with which we conceive knowledge by making judgments on perception gained through the sense organs.

Elements can be seen in light of mathematical and scientific space-time theories, we have elements as parts of a constancy and events. In sound, elements can be said to be parts of a composite wave form - it becomes a time element. Sound and light behave in a similar wave form language, Light is measured through temperature systems as in the Kelvin measurement system, existing as elements on a scale. Both sound and light operate as measurable and visible frequencies, scientifically disclosing the range within and without the audible and the visible, an echo of what can be observed in the nuanced color spectrums of the Aurora Borealis.

The verticals in Elements, define spatial relations and create a state of immersivity with colors blending into one another, merging and recreating new colors while simultaneously enveloping the body.  The verticality on our eye acts as signage, a post, a portal, arresting the eye by creating new space and defining our memory of space. By this definition we experience the light structure as either confining or liberating. Color embodies a psychology that effects our perceptive and cognitive system.  A verticality is experienced as an opening/uplifting and transformative sensation, representing the connection with a universe, while horizontal lines can remind us of the open landscape, the sea merging with the sun, perhaps internally experienced as a deep sleep or calming sensation. We are invited to experience the emotionally visceral and spectral physicality within multicolored verticals and mono colored horizon environment, touching the atoms of our being, resonating through vibrations of frequencies. The color compositions relate to sound compositions, in that one enters through a cool color space, gradually moving towards a multi colored crescendo. As the colors intensify in combination, the sensorial system is stimulated further, allowing us to be enveloped in color spectrums as a meditative and yet energetically charged process, As a time-experience installation, neon colors merge organically and seemingly expand over time, the nature of neon gas is organic and a transmitter of electrical currents, it is in continuous movement emitting abundance and perpetual absence of form, yet in fact exposing the opposite though creation of light and color as form. With its eternal presence, light represents the perceptual experience of the infinite and deepest elements of our shared humanity.

Short version: On Elements, 2018

Anne Senstad examines the sensorial architecture and philosophies on perception through light, color and sound. Her immersive sculptural light installation 'Elements' defines space through topologies of vertical light, the phenomenon of color in relation to its nature, a non-objective space of frequencies, structuralities and elements.

Through the verticality of light and color, the vertical composition define spatial relations by creating immersivity of colors blending into one another, merging and recreating new colors. The verticality on our eye acts as signage, a post, barrier, arresting the eye by creating space and defining space. By this definition we experience the structure as limiting or liberating.

By placing a horizontal line throughout the space, it introduces an optical and spatial experience where we see the‫ ‬color combinations multiply, creating illusions of space and color as the colors merge with lines drawn of light seemingly floating in its immersivity.

With an eternal presence, light represents the perceptual experience of the infinite and deepest elements of our shared humanity‫.‬

THROUGH THE SPECTRUM

The exhibition bases its foundation around Luminism and the relationship that the containment of light has between our environment and our engagement with it.
Renowned artists are showcasing seminal works, each treats light in a unique way allowing the viewer to immerse oneself into the light through variable formations and positioning. These installations of light are put together to exceed their material, thus allowing a flow of transcendent effects on the viewer, to steer and expand the human consciousness.
This experiential and interactive exhibition sets to subvert notions of light and space as we understand them, and the cross overs these may have in playing with our perceptions and psychology. All together are intended to explore the human visual perception, and how both light and color affect our emotions or change the way we feel within a space.
One artist creates a sensorial representation of unlimited possibilities of the imagination and of existence.  These representation are created out of chaos—the experience of infinity within us.
While other artists explore color theory and pushes the boundaries of light to divide and redefine space all the while blurring the lines between each hue and indeed our visual perception of it.
Whether the gradual adjustment of color around one room renders it unperceivable, or if one is met with the sheer starkness of color in the next, they all require the reliable rendering of the eye to distinguish the stability of the space and the accuracy of the color of the original environment.
What is experienced depends on their physical positioning within the space, coupled with their own psychological state and visual perception. The ephemeral nature of transitory light shifts the stability within our understanding of 3 dimensional space as we have grown to know it, allowing for a new perception of how we view our surrounding reality to be created.
Participating artists: Anne Senstad, Carlos Cruz-Diez, James Turrell, Leo Villareal, Nasser Al Salem, and Robert Irwin.

FROM OTHER WORLDS

From Other Worlds presents photographic works from two series Anne Senstad produced between 2013-2015, Universals Foldouts and Color Kinesthesia. By interweaving an elaborate amalgamation of an analogue and technological tapestry, her work examines the phenomena of light and color, space and volume; the narratives of perception and the processes within hybridization of elements.

Color Kinesthesia derives from projections of color over time, into corners and structures, where the blending of one color into another, cause chromatic compositions in an impregnated space. The kinaesthetic colors continue to create new identities as Senstad photographs them onto color film negative, allowing for chemical reactions to take place on the celluloid level. These elements embedded in focused acts of seeing and observation carry across into the idea of solidifying the imagined space, where a series of sculptural works were born from her light and color installations; Universals.

In Plato’s ideas of Universals, the objects are abstracts with characteristics of perception, much as in Malevich’s Suprematism. In Senstad’s foldouts of her Universals sculptures, she has deconstructed the very object she created, the map of her creation, and unfolded it to a recipe for re-assembly. As a silent witness to the final sculpture-potential, the shape contains collaged color film in the place of its original completion, a finality in itself, yet a dialogue between before and after.

In her practice, Senstad delves deeply into the relationship between the senses, especially between the ocular, the science of color vision and the aural language. Engrained in the foundation of her work we find perception — how what we see, including the colors around us, shape how we feel. The stimuli are objective but the experiences are subjective, mirroring ourselves, our brains, and our psyches. Senstad’s work follows this complex investigation of what is physical versus what is psychological, and where these lines blur. It does so generously, unveiling atomic truths on both ends of the spectrum and at many points in between.

Soft Geometry - TRAFO KUNSTHALL

SOFT GEOMETRY / ANNE KATRINE SENSTAD

OPENING - JANUARY 13, 1-4 PM

The sun, I presume you will say, not only furnishes to visibles the power of visibility but it also provides for their generation and growth and nurture though it is not itself generation.”

Plato, The Republic, Book. VI, Section 509 D

Anne Katrine Senstad's interdisciplinary practice has since the mid 90’s crossed photography, video, neon sculpture, immersive and site specific installations. Her work has throughout her career been focused on the phenomena of perception and the sensorial elements; light, color, sound with a consideration for color theory, science and technology.

Neon light occupies space with a natural enveloping softness and emotive language inviting the viewer into subliminal ways of perceiving the object through the essence of light and color. Her multiple forms of light installations are ways of working with and understanding spatial relations in terms of the psychological space, by seeing, observing and controlling suggested perceptions of the sensorial elements.

In the neon sculpture series Soft Geometry, Senstad begins by transposing a space inhabited by light from her video projection installations Color Synesthesia I-VII, 2005 – 2015, (Synesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway). The space is then outlined as a potential object through line drawings based on Senstad’s cognitive interpretations. As the projected colors shift through hues over intervals of time, the form of the imagined object changes, from squares to triangles, where its own essence exists as pure potential, towards synthesis. These forms create illusions of space, mass and object. The light-line drawings she creates are flat, but illuminate space dimensionally through optical illusion. The origin of the geometric form is light, captured and impregnating a space, to navigate itself into suggesting solid form that becomes the Soft Geometry neon sculptures.

New York based Norwegian artist Anne Katrine Senstad was educated at Parsons School of Design and The New School for Social Research in New York. Notable exhibitions include her controversial In Absentia exhibition Topologies for a Vertical Sound with composer C.C. Hennix - Displaced from the Void Rooms of Centro Culturale Don Orione Artigianelli during the 57th Venice Biennale, her solo show The Vanity of Vanities at El Magazen Dell’Arte during the 56th Venice Biennale,  and UNIVERSALS at Officina Delle Zattere, Collaterali Eventi 55th Venice Biennale. In 2015 she produced a 90 ft long text based LED sculpture commissioned by the Bruges Art and Architecture Triennale in Belgium entitled Gold Guides Me(Capitalism in the Public Realm). Public art commissions include with architecture firms Snøhetta, at The Wolfe Center for the Arts, Ohio and TWBT Architects, Penn State Engineering Building. Her work is represented in private, corporate and institutional collections.

SOFT GEOMETRY

Anne Katrine Senstad (1967) er utdannet ved New School for Social Research, Parsons School of Design i New York og Berkeley University i California. Hun bor og arbeider i Oslo og New York. Hun har utført utsmykningsoppdrag for Snøhetta New York og Todd Williams/Billie Tsien architects.
